The effects of social media on the food and drink industry

managing communities - the key to tasty grub and successful business

Check out this brilliant article by Tim Hayward in the FT, “Gossip is Good”.

He highlights the importance of having a well managed online community presence in the restaurant industry.

“Food memes spread like fire through the channels of Twitter, where, for example, trends for pop-up restaurants, more authentic burgers and even a revival in DIY British charcuterie are currently burgeoning,” he says.

He raises an excellent point. Restaurants have traditionally failed or succeeded based on word of mouth recommendations rather than just reviews and surely the word of blog/Twitter recommendation is becoming just as important. Would you spend your hard earned cash visiting a new restaurant based on virtual recommendations?
